The Importance
of Constructor Certification
The management of construction has changed and expanded dramatically in the
Twentieth Century. These changes have resulted in increased responsibilities
and obligations
for the Professional Constructor. In an effort to recognize the unique technical
and managerial knowledge and skills required today, the American Institute
of Constructors (AIC) Certification Commission qualifies individuals through
education,
experience and examination for the professional designations of Associate
Constructor (AC) and Certified Professional
Constructor (CPC).
AIC's
History with Constructor Certification
The AIC has been qualifying the Constructor through examination of experience
and education since its inception in 1971. In 1994, the AIC Constructor Certification
Commission was organized under the auspices of the AIC to expand the qualifying
process with a written examination and to offer an internationally recognized
certification process to AIC members and nonmembers alike. The certification
process is peer developed with the goal of setting high standards for the skills,
knowledge, education and conduct of the Certified Constructor.

"Certification for the professional constructor is long overdue. With construction
projects and project relationships becoming more complex, and with the project
delivery processes often being driven by the construction entity, there is need
to recognize the constructor for what he or she is. . . a truly professional
member of the project delivery team."
